C&D Technologies, Inc. Awarded $6 Million Contract for Taiwan Power Company's Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant

BLUE BELL, Pa., May 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- C&D Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: CHP) announced today that it has been awarded contracts valued at nearly $6,000,000 to supply back-up power systems for Taiwan Power Company's Lungmen Project, which consists of two 1350 MW power units.

"We are excited to announce that C&D Technologies has been awarded contracts to supply back-up power systems for the two new reactors under construction for Taiwan Power Company's (TPC) Lungmen Project," said Dr. Jeffrey Graves, President and Chief Executive Officer for C&D Technologies. "TPC and C&D have worked together since the construction of their first nuclear power plant, the Chin Shan Nuclear Power Station, over 35 years ago. While C&D has the largest base of experience in back-up power for the nuclear power industry with over 30 years of support, the Lungmen Project was extremely challenging with the location being one of the most active seismic regions in the world and the structural requirements very exacting. To insure that the C&D battery systems satisfied these extreme design requirements, seismic conditions exceeding 8g's were physically simulated using a unique tri-axle vibration table designed to test battery performance during and after a major earthquake. This investment, which goes beyond standard modeling simulations, is just one example of C&D's ongoing commitment to the nuclear industry worldwide," said Dr. Graves.

Dr. Graves continued, "C&D has supplied back-up power for nuclear power plants since the construction of the first full-scale, commercial US plants in the 1970s, and currently supplies back-up power to over 70% of the North American nuclear power industry. Reflecting C&D's commitment to the nuclear power industry, we recently tested back-up power batteries that had been decommissioned from a nuclear power plant following over 19 years of uninterrupted service. Testing for these naturally aged cells yielded 108% of rated capacity, a record unparalleled in the industry. We are proud of this heritage and, with the cost of energy escalating rapidly in recent years, will continue to focus on this important market segment with investments in the product technology, quality, testing and project management expertise required to meet the needs of our customers in this exacting worldwide marketplace."
