Extending battery life in backup systems

Here at C&D, one of the most common questions we get asked about our batteries is, “how long do they last?” It's an important question because our batteries are supporting critical loads all over the world. 

Each battery is designed to last anywhere from 10-20 years, so its not always practical to build a battery and wait until it reaches end of life. To make sure that our products have a long service life, we accelerate some of the aging processes to simulate years of life in a few weeks or months. These temperature chambers can maintain temperatures as high as 71 degrees Celsius or 160 degrees Fahrenheit. 

By float charging a lead acid battery at these high temperatures, we accelerate positive grid corrosion on both flooded and VRLA batteries and accelerate the dryout process on VRLA batteries. For example, every 28 days spent at 60 degrees Celsius or 140 degrees Fahrenheit is equivalent to one year in service, so we can simulate a decade of service in less than a year. 

After each 28 day cycle, we remove the battery from the temperature chamber and capacity test it. If the battery capacity is above 80%, it goes back into the oven for another 28 days and the process continues until the battery reaches its end of life. With the data we gather from tests like these, we can go back and redesign our batteries to slow down these
