
New Paper on High-Temp VRLA Battery Advancements

C&D has released a new white paper by VP Robert Malley. "Large Format VRLA Batteries for High-Temperature Environments," examines the technical challenges of operating backup power systems in high-temperature environments such as outdoor wireless cabinets, remote telecommunications sites, and other installations.
Understanding how batteries perform in uncontrolled environments
Traditional VRLA batteries will degrade in hot conditions. Climate control and cooling measures increase costs and energy demands. However, innovative design and material choices help to "allow long life at room temperature and good performance at high temperature."
Malley’s paper explains the factors that influence battery operation and performance under hot conditions, including recombination, insulating space, positive float current feedback, and intergranular corrosion. He presents charts and tables that help readers visualize how the materials and components of batteries affect corrosion, capacity, lifespan, and high-temperature operation.

The results of baseline characterization testing, elevated temperature testing, and capacity testing show the performance of C&D’s advanced VRLA batteries under high-temperature conditions. Additional insights into battery design considerations and accelerated life testing show how high-temp-capable VRLA batteries can help operators reduce operating costs while maintaining critical infrastructure reliability.
An added benefit of batteries built to perform well in extreme heat is that they are also likely to outperform traditional VRLA batteries in controlled temperature applications.
