Snapshot
A telecommunications giant is experiencing surging demand for its high-speed internet and TV services. It recently expanded one of its large, centralized facilities that serves as a major broadcasting hub. To support this growth, the company needed a UPS power backup partner it could trust, one that could deliver not just reliability, but peace of mind.
That’s where C&D Technologies came in. Our Pure Lead Max VRLA batteries didn’t just meet the load test requirements–they outperformed, exceeding the load test by more than 30%.
Beyond product performance, what truly stood out was C&D’s holistic approach. The customer was impressed by the Pure Lead Max battery’s 8-year warranty, as well as the high level of service and support C&D provided throughout the entire process.
This approach delivered a highly reliable C&D standby battery backup solution designed for long-term confidence and ensuring that millions of customers stay connected, no matter what.
Case Study Facts
Customer: Large telecommunications company
Application: Data center UPS power backup
C&D Solution: Pure Lead Max AGM Battery for UPS
C&D Partner: American Technical Support (ATS)
C&D Advantage:
The telecommunications giant operates multiple large, centralized hubs in the U.S., providing cable television service to customers nationwide. One is a 6 MW data center managing between 450-600 channels. To maintain premium performance for its customers, the provider added 2 MW of backup power via two 1 MW UPS systems to the existing data center.
Faulty batteries can bring down the entire system. Backup batteries are a data center’s lifeline. C&D proved it was the most reliable solution for such a mission-critical environment."
Bob Leissle, President of ATSReliability is mission-critical for telecom
Millions of customers rely on the data center for their cable TV programming. Maintaining operation is paramount.
"Obviously they need highly reliable backup equipment for the site," said Bob Leissle, President of American Technical Support, a Certified Partner of C&D. ATS is a Florida-based company providing battery maintenance, testing, and installation services nationwide.
C&D and ATS—which has a multi-year relationship with the customer—had numerous meetings with project stakeholders. They were open to a new UPS battery backup provider because products from a previous manufacturer had failed.

Cross-functional team to design and conduct load testing
To ensure the solution met the provider’s specifications, C&D leveraged its experienced cross-functional team. The team showcased the high performance of the Pure Lead Max VRLA battery and demonstrated how it would pass the demanding load test.
C&D was so committed to understanding the project that its Senior Director for VRLA–who had been part of the original Pure Lead Max design team–met with the customer team multiple times.
"It’s the support that customers get from C&D. It’s one of the many things that sets them apart," said Leissle.
Meeting the challenges for UPS power backup performance
The load test simulated a power outage at full capacity. Most data centers only need 15-30 seconds of battery backup support before emergency diesel engine generators begin to operate.
In these data centers, however, the UPS power backup is expected to monitor the input power from the utility and provide energy, when necessary, as well. For these reasons, the telecom company required the batteries to perform for 7.5 minutes during the load test.
The Pure Lead Max AGM UPS batteries were more than up to the task. One system ran for 11 minutes, and the other system operated for 11 minutes and 20 seconds.
"When the system reached ten minutes, then eleven, the lead engineer realized Pure Lead Max was the battery they needed,” said Leissle.
Strong battery warranty upgrade adds value to project
The customer also found C&D's 8-year warranty to be a key benefit. The Pure Lead Plus battery warranty is twice as long as that from the previous manufacturer who provided the backup battery solution for the original 6 MW data center.
The combination of performance, warranty, and support secured the project. C&D now supplies standby batteries, housed in cabinets, that back up the additional 2 MW data center.
"Faulty batteries can bring down the entire system. Backup batteries are a data center’s lifeline. C&D proved it was the most reliable solution for such a mission-critical environment," said Leissle.
